Florida Blood Center: Donated Blood is used within 36 Hours

Florida Blood Center:  Donated Blood is used within 36 Hours

As some of you know last week I was giving my "
Hero Story" to the Florida Blood Center.  Originally they were going to come to my house for the interview and taping, but since I was due to donate blood we decided to meet at the local blood center in Royal Palm Beach FL.

I arrived a few minutes early for my appointment, but I didn't have to wait long for Nancy and her crew to arrive from Orlando.  Nancy is a reporter with the Florida Blood Centers who has been creating "Hero Stories"for the past four months.  These stories are about donors who give blood and patients who receive blood. ( Donor Stories & Patient Stories).

As I filled out all of my paperwork Nancy and I started talking about donating blood and the incredible stories she has heard.  During this conversation I learned that donated blood is used within 36 hours.  Yes, you read that correctly donated blood is used within 36 hours.  I was completely unaware of the blood shortage and I myself will make more of an effort to donate every 56 days, not 57th or 58th.

Save a Life today by donating an hour of your time and blood.

ActiveRain lead to my Hero Story with the Florida Blood Center's

Back in August I participated in one of Bob Stewart's Challenges and wrote:  Florida's Blood Centers - Save a life in less than an hour while watching TV!

I wrote this blog hoping it would encourage people to donate blood.  Little did I know that Florida Blood Center's would find my blog and contact me.

Florida Blood CenterWhen I received their call I assumed they were giving me a friendly reminder that I was eligible to donate blood, but that was not the case.  The Florida Blood Center called because they read my blog on ActiveRain and wanted me to do a "Hero Story," which consisted of a
short interview on camera explaining why I donate blood.

I immediately thanked them for calling, but let them know I don't have a great story of why I donate blood.  My reason for donating blood is simple, it's an easy way to give back, which doesn't sound like much of a story to me.

I have a fear of camera's and was reluctant to do the interview, but it's for an excellent cause and I could not say no.
So now I have until Thursday to set aside my fear and tell my "Hero Story."

Florida's Blood Centers - Save a life in less than an hour while watching TV!

"Every three seconds someone, somewhere, needs a blood transfusion."

Florida Blood CenterDid you know it takes less than an hour to donate a pint of blood?   This week I finally had a spare hour to donate blood and I'll be eligible to make another donation in 56 days.  My blood type is on the rare side, so for me it's even more important that I go as much as I can.

For those who haven't donated blood before it's a simple process.

The Florida Blood Center I go to in Royal Palm Beach accepts walk-in, so I can go whenever I have a spare hour.  The entire process from start to finish usually takes less than a hour.

You will need to fill out a simple questionnaire, then your temperature, iron level and blood pressure are checked.  Your donation will be assigned a number and you can go online in roughly two days to find out your cholesterol level.

Florida Blood CenterOf course you get free drinks and snacks, but the best part about donating blood besides the donation itself is the awesome bandages.  The last time I went my band-aid had the word "GIVE" on it and my bandage was purple with smiley faces and a pink bow was attached.  How can you say no to that?

I encourage everyone to donate blood if you are eligible to.  It's such a simple thing and it save lives.
