Thankful
Thursday - Paying it Forward
This past soccer season my
son, Chase, was chosen to be
the captain of his team. As his mother and one of his coaches I could
not have been more proud of how he lead his team all the way to the
Championship trophy.
Chase
is usually the highest goal scorer for his teams
and this season was no different.
However
this season became very different as I watched my son go from wearing a
captains arm band to becoming a true leader.
As I watched Chase
drive down the soccer field during his fourth game,
with the ball at his feet only seconds away from scoring his 3rd goal
of the game he suddenly passed the ball to his right forward, Oscar.
Oscar
took the shot and scored his 3rd goal of the game
referred to in soccer as a "hat trick," something most young soccer
player's will never achieve. That was Oscar's only hat trick of the
season and the only other player to achieve this status was Chase, who
managed to do it five times.
As
the boys walked off the field high-fiving one another
Chase turned to my husband with a grin on his face and said "Yeah I know I had the
shot, but Oscar was only one away from his hat trick."
What Chase didn't mention was he too was only one goal away from a hat
trick and at that moment my husband and I knew he truly deserved to be
wearing
the captains
band.
However the story
doesn't end there. A few
games later Oscar had his own shot on goal, but passed the ball to his
teammate, Caleb, who only plays defense and has never scored a goal in
his life. Unfortunately Caleb didn't score, but nobody cared,
instead
the entire team, parents and coaches went wild cheering him on.
As
Oscar came off the field, he
smiled at my husband and said "Chase gave me my hat
trick, I owed it back to the team."
Chase
never told Oscar he "gave" him the hat trick,
but Oscar knew and it was one of the best examples I've ever witnessed
of paying it forward.
I am truly Thankful to
have such a wonderful son like Chase.
