Last week a lot of Wellington Florida residents were outraged and concerned by a segment that aired on NBC's Today Show about the dangers of car surfing, which is when a person climbs on top of a moving vehicle and "surfs it."
As Matt Lauer discussed this growing issue of car surfing he introduced Kerry Sanders who was reporting from Wellington Florida. A map of Wellington prominently appeared on viewers TV screens and lead everyone to believe that Wellington Florida was the "car surfing" capital, which according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office there have been ZERO reports of car surfing taking place in Wellington Florida.
So why was Wellington Florida part of the broadcast? Simple, "it was a convenient meeting point for the production crew."
This is Wellington's official release on the situation:
"After receiving phone calls from concerned parents, Wellington staff checked with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and discovered that there has not been a single reported incident of car surfing in Wellington. We also spoke with the Today Show production crew and learned that Wellington was chosen for this story because it was a convenient meeting point for the production crew and the reporter. This story unnecessarily alarmed our residents and implied that this very dangerous activity was problematic in Wellington. As a community, we do not understand why the Today Show, MSNBC and MSN chose to characterize Wellington in such a bad light. We have contacted the Today Show about our concerns."
