Last week I received an e-mail from FPL, our local electric company that was titled "FPL: Why are bills higher in the summer?"
The title peaked my curiosity, so I opened up the e-mail and found a great newsletter with a ton of information on how consumers can save money on their electric bill.
My favorite article was "Learn how the small stuff adds up," which provides an Appliance Calculator where you pick a smaller appliance that you use, like a ceiling fan, hairdryer or clothes dryer. After picking the small appliance you then pick the average hours a day you use it and how many times a month.
I rarely use my ceiling fans, but I wanted to see how much money I would be throwing away if I ran one 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and it turns out I would be spending approximately $127.00 a year and if I had all six of my ceiling fans running that would be over $1,500 a year.
Thankfully none of my ceiling fans are on 24-7, but this is great information to share with my boys who tend to forget to turn theirs off once in a while. It's also a great tool to see if I can reduce my bill in anyway.
